Home-schooling Comment

Hey Mom. I wrote this as a comment under your comment on my post. Then I realized that you'd probably never see it down there. So, I've copied and pasted it here:

I remember Liz Jensen talking about her Jefferson method of schooling. I like the idea of having children of all ages learning together. However, I don't like that it's just kids learning whatever they express an interest in. "Oh an ant! Let's learn more about ants. Let's get a book about ants, etc...." There's just not enough structure there, and kids thrive in structured environments. I want our kids to be challenged, but also have a kid-friendly environment to learn in. I think you're right that it would be best to find a religious private school. I wish the Church would start doing schools. Maybe my San Diego legacy will be to start an LDS-oriented charter school where kids can feel safe in their educational environment.

  1. Oh, oops. I meant to post this under the original blog...ah, this'll do. Jarem and I want to homeschool Ari, and any other kids we are blessed, or not blessed, to get. :) We understand the problems with it, but we believe there are greater problems in public schools...and the least of those are safety threats. We're more concerned about pornography, immorality, and most of all, the stagnent brain. Kids wither in schools- they are so bored in the US that they get into trouble just to have something to do. And that's the least of it. We absolutely don't want Ari losing his excitement with the world, and with exploring and learning. There is so much to enjoy- reading, writing, math, science, arts, sports...these things don't have to be boring and academic- they can be tied up with real life lessons. I know, I know...I sound like an idealist...but I am! :) Jarem made me laugh yesterday. He paused, and said, "Hey Sara, we're turning into hippies. We moved to Oregon, and now we're hippies." haha. Elizabeth, you can send your kids up here to school with us- in your private jet.

  2. Ha ha ha, I wish we could be rich enough some day to have a private jet! If we were rich enough for that, I would send my kids to Bill Gates' special school in San Diego. I'm an idealist, too, I just worry about balancing all the needful things with the good things and the desired things (ie academics with social, etc.). Sometimes I think I'd want to homeschool, but then I remember that I can't do math and I'm not a teacher. My kids would be great at English and recess! :) Oh well, we'll figure it out, right?! Dan was a hippie in high school. He even had long hair and all that! Total hippie. :)
