One year older and wiser too

Frer la hair gaburtstock, in German they say it too. :)

Happy Birthday Lizzie! I was going to do this earlier but I went to bed at 8:00p.m. last night so I could catch the "Rhino" early this morning and come to the Green Zone. Now I'm sitting here in the nice embassy lounge writing a happy birthday message. Hey, it's still the 15th back in Utah....at least for a few more hours. :)

I hope you had a great birthday.

Love you!

- Daniel

  4. Dad comments: Just to impress everyone with the power of memory . . . I took my last German class in high school 42 years ago, and I can still recall how to spell it and how to say it:

    it's Froliche Geburtstag

Froliche (with an umlaut over the "o" -- that's two horizontal dots, giving it an "er" sound)

geboren is the verb to be born, and tag means day.

How's that for a boring German lesson. Well, after all the Spanish and Hebrew, and a smattering of other tongues, it's amazing that there's ANY German left in my grey matter. But hey, it shows that the very first thing planted in there has staying power. . . . There must be a gospel lesson in all that.

And talk about impressive: how does Elizabeth know that in German you have to spell it "schpelling" when she didn't have a single German class ever?! What awesome children I have.

  5. Hardy har, Dad. I love the German lesson. I always like to learn new things...like using umlauts (I love that word) in other languages. :) And about that "schpelling," well, what can I say? I guess I'm just a genius, descended from geniuses. :)

  6. Jarem, I'm going to name our next child Umlaut, okay?

  7. Dad replies again:

Sara, that's hilarious . . . "baby Umlaut" -- now I forbid you to give it second thought! It's verboten!

  8. Ha! Dan, I'm going to name our next baby "Verboten" okay?! Maybe "Verbotena" if it's a girl. :)
